Studio Residency Program
ArtSpan offers below market-rate studio rentals to artists in San Francisco as part of a cooperative residency program. Artists must be new or existing ArtSpan Artist Members ($50 annual) to be eligible to apply. Click here for membership information.
Studio space is offered to artists who have recently been displaced from their San Francisco studios, those who have never had a studio (outside of home or school), and those with a project-based need for work space. The selected artists are expected to contribute as cooperative and collaborative members of the studio community, to volunteer with ArtSpan, and to participate with SF Open Studios in the fall. See below for studio residency location(s) and application details.

Studio At [X]SPACE:
the newest collaborative arts hub in San Francisco
5137 Mission Street, SF, 94112
ArtSpan and Youth Art Exchange (YAX) have partnered to occupy a vacant storefront on the Mission Street Corridor of the Excelsior neighborhood. Volunteers and artists have been working tirelessly to transform the dormant space into a youth and artist-driven interactive art-making exhibition space.
This new arts hub, called [x]space, is located at 5137 Mission Street, formerly Chuck’s Meat Market. It will host a gallery, art workshops and events, a YAX youth-run print shop, ArtSpan artist studios, and public programming.
ArtSpan will manage one artist studio at [x]space as part of their Studio Residency Program. This will provide an ArtSpan artist with affordable studio space, plus an opportunity to engage with the Excelsior community and the youth artists who work out of [x]space.
[x]space will enable Youth Art Exchange to better serve their existing program participants and significantly expand access to additional programming that will occur on-site, serving people of all ages and backgrounds.
Youth and community members of all ages will have access to [x]space. The “x” in [x]space is related to exchange, experimentation, Excelsior, and x as a variable. This dynamic arts space will enable our organizations to expand the arts in the Excelsior by encouraging creative exchange between youth artists, professional artists, and community.
